October is Dwarfism Awareness Month. Around the world, we celebrate over 400 Dwarfism conditions and collectively raise awareness of what it’s like to live as a very small person in a tall world.
I’m excited to announce that I am partnering with Arcaeda, a North East disability arts organisation, to bring together people from the Dwarfism community for a fantastic Zine Making Workshop on Dwarfism Awareness Day on Saturday, 25th October.
Why we’re running this workshop
Being a little person/restricted growth/person with dwarfism can feel isolating. There are the daily stares and crap behaviour when we go about our daily lives. This Zine Making workshop is an opportunity to connect with other community members and share our experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
There’ll be lots of cutting and sticking, a space to chill and relax and the opportunity to talk in a safe space.
Workshop Details
The event is taking place from 10.00am to 2.00pm in Newcastle City Centre. We’ll be working with the fantastic artist, Jo Howell, to learn how to make a Zine.
I had a look around the Arcadea studios last week. It is accessible – we’ll need a couple of stools here and there, but nothing we aren’t used to. There is also space to take a break from the group when you need a few minutes to decompress. The place is warm as well.
The venue is all on one level. Grainger Town car park, situated directly above the building, provides designated disabled parking and has a lift. It’s then a short 2-minute walk to the entrance. Newcastle train station is about a 10-minute (our speed) walk to the venue.
You’ll need to bring your own packed lunch, but there will be refreshments available throughout the day.
The event is for people with Dwarfism aged 18+, across the UK.
